With 2016 quickly approaching and 2015 nearly behind us, it’s time to reflect on our past year and to look forward to what we want to accomplish in the new year. Part of succeeding in the new year is effectively setting goals, so read on for our tips.
Review Your Successes and Struggles
Our last post detailed how to review your year in health, and acknowledging where you are is a very important part of setting goals. Look at where you are now. What works? What’s not working? That’s your foundation for the goals you choose for next year.
Consider SMART Goals
You may have heard of the SMART method. In short, it encompasses the following as characteristics for goals:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Realistic
- Time-bound
You can read more about the specifics of the SMART method here. It’s a great jumping off point to think about setting new year’s resolutions that stick.
Don’t Be Afraid to Get a Little Uncomfortable
One of the potential limits of the SMART method is that it can encourage you to be safe. And while there’s merit in setting achievable goals, there’s also something to be said for reaching for things a little outside your comfort zone. Are you inflexible but want to explore the benefits of yoga? Go for it! Never run a mile in your life? Sign up for that 5K and find yourself a training plan.
Reflect and Adjust Throughout the Year
It’s hard to know what’s going to happen next week let alone through all twelve months of next year. Make appointments with yourself to review your goals and adjust them as necessary at intervals throughout the year. A monthly check-in is great, but even quarterly will allow you to see where you are, where you’re headed, and determine if you need to adjust your course.
