How to Set Health Goals for the New Year

It’s never a bad time to reflect on our past year and to look forward to what we want to accomplish in the new year.  Part of succeeding in the new year health-wise is effectively setting goals, so read on for our tips.

Review Your Successes and Struggles

In setting new health goals, it’s almost important to understand where you are currently and where you hope to improve in the future. Take some time to reflect on what has worked for your condition in the past as well as treatments and activities you’ve tried that didn’t work as well. Researching other ideas for treatment or tools to assist you with your chronic condition can also provide useful foundation when setting your new health goals.

Consider SMART Health Goals

You may have heard of the SMART method.  In short, it’s an acronym that establishes 5 criteria any new goals should meet:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Time-bound

You can read more about the specifics of the SMART method here.  It’s a great jumping off point to think about setting new year’s resolutions that stick.

Don’t Be Afraid to Get a Little Uncomfortable

One of the potential limits of the SMART method is that it can encourage you to think small or too inside box.  And while there’s merit in setting easily achievable goals, there’s also something to be said for reaching for things a little outside your comfort zone.  Are you inflexible but want to explore the benefits of yoga? Go for it!  Never run a mile in your life?  Sign up for that 5K and find yourself a training plan. Don’t be afraid for your health goals to reflect new endeavors you hope to try in the future.

Reflect and Adjust Throughout the Year

It’s hard to know what’s going to happen next week let alone through all twelve months of next year.  Try to set aside time every so often to review your health goals and adjust them as needed.  A monthly check-in is great, but even quarterly reflection will allow you to see where you are, where you’re headed, and determine if you need to adjust your course.
