Why You Need to Stay Hydrated

With record temperatures sweeping across the United States this week, it's a good time to review why you need to stay hydrated, especially if you have a chronic illness. Your Body Works Best When You Stay Hydrated Did you know every cell in your body is dependent on water to function correctly?  Waste removal, food digestion, nutrient transport, and joint lubrication all rely on proper hydration.  And in the summer heat, one of water's most vital functions for the human body is temperature regulation.  You need to stay hydrated to stay healthy in the summer heat. Your Body Uses Water To Say Cool When you breathe or sweat, your body is cooling itself down.  Faster breathing and more profuse sweating, as during exercise, increases the need for water.  If you don't give your body enough water, you'll experience dehydration and maybe even heat stroke. Recognize the Signs of Dehydration The first sign of dehydration is thirst.  If you're thirsty, that means your body is already in a state of mild dehydration, so it's best to stay ahead of the game and drink your water.  Other signs of dehydration include dry mouth, decreased urination, concentrated urine, fatigue or sleepiness, dizziness and dry skin. If you notice any of these symptoms, get yourself a tall glass of water and start rehydrating your body right away to avoid more severe dehydration or even shock.
