When you’re in the home stretch of winter and everyone has been passing the same germs around for months, it can seem like everyone around you is sick. But you don’t have to join them. Here are three strategies to stay healthy when everyone around you is sick.
Eat Healthy to Stay Healthy
One of your best bets for staying healthy is to make sure you’re eating a healthy diet — think fresh fruits and vegetables of all colors, and make them organic when possible. Consider limiting or avoiding gluten or dairy, which can be difficult for some folks to digest. And consider taking a probiotic supplement, which helps keep the good bacteria your gut needs in balance.
Move Your Body to Boost Immunity
A healthy body is much more able to fight off disease. Exercise is particularly helpful because it increases circulation, and increased circulation means you’re getting more white blood cells to find and attack the germs that cause illness.
And you don’t have to have a gym membership or fancy equipment to get your workout in. Invest in some hand weights (start with 3s and 5s if you’re new to strength training, and work your way up to 8s, 10s, 12s and beyond) and a few workout DVDs or even check out youtube (one of our current youtube favorites is Tony Horton’s Accelerated Series — about 10 minutes a piece and free).
Make Sleep a Priority
Sleep is how your body heals itself and restores the immune system. If you’re not getting your 8 hours daily, start making it a priority. Turn off all your screens at least 30 minutes before bedtime (that includes your cell phone!), and create a routine that helps your brain and body realize it’s time for bed. Most importantly, protect your bedtime! Set an alarm if you have to, but make sure you’re getting to bed early enough to get those 8 hours.
