Housewalking: What It Is & Why You Should Be Doing It

We’re constantly being encouraged to incorporate more activity into our daily lives.  While it can seem daunting, there’s a simple way to be more active that requires zero equipment, no gym membership, and no exercise DVDs.  All you need is your own body!  It’s called housewalking, and it’s gaining momentum as one of the best new ways to stay active in our day-to-day lives.  Read on to find out why housewalking is so great. What is Housewalking? Housewalking is exactly what it sounds like.  You simply walk around your house, around your office, around wherever it is you currently are -- instead of being sedentary.  And it's a great way to get in those recommended 10,000 steps a day.  Think about all the activities you usually do seated during which you could walk instead: talking on the phone, reading, watching TV, listening to music or podcasts, etc.  Instead of sitting, get up and get moving! If You Can Walk, You Can Do It One of the best things about housewalking is how easy it is to participate.  If you have the good fortune of mobility, then you can housewalk.  It’s an extremely accessible activity for people of all levels of physical fitness and health.  Even if you use a cane or other device to help you walk, you can still housewalk. Improve the Way Your Body Moves Housewalking doesn’t feel like it’s a whole lot of effort, especially if you’re engaged in something else like a phone call or reading a book.  And yet, what feels fairly easy actually builds muscle, improves coordination, and increases endurance -- all good things! Walk No Matter the Weather Getting outside and walking has its own benefits, but sometimes Mother Nature has other ideas.  Whether it’s a torrential downpour, a midwestern snow and ice storm or blistering summer heat, there are times when it’s just not a good idea to get outside.  But with housewalking, it doesn’t matter!  You can still get your steps in no matter what it’s doing outside.
