Feb. 29 is Rare Disease Day

If you suffer from a chronic illness, it might feel like you're struggling alone, especially if your disease is rare.  And in the United States, a rare disease is classified as one that affects fewer than 200,000 Americans at any given time.  But even if a group is relatively small, that's still a lot of people fighting the same battles you are, and today -- Rare Disease Day -- is a a day to find your community.   What is Rare Disease Day? Rare Disease Day encourages people with rare diseases to come together with patient organizations, medical professionals, medical researchers and others in the medical industry to come together and raise awareness and support for those with rare diseases. Rare Disease Day 2016: Patient Voice The theme for this year's Rare Disease Day is Patient Voice, in an acknowledgment of the importance of patients advocating for themselves, both privately with their medical team and support system, and publicly via research grants and fundraising. Get Involved with Rare Disease Day If you have a rare disease or want to support those who do, today is the perfect day to get involved.  Starting with this year's theme of "Patient Voice," you can focus on the following: Get involved with the organizations that support rare diseases, which helps reduce feelings of isolation and puts you in touch with others sharing the same struggles. Learn about your disease (or the disease of your loved one) so you can better advocate for the care you deserve. Reach out to politicians to increase awareness and public health policies at national and international levels. Advocate for others on a personal level, helping them find resources and quality patient care. For more information on Rare Disease Day, visit their website or the National Organization for Rare Diseases.
